First 5 Sacramento Commission Approves Budget Restoration Plan

The First 5 Sacramento Commission yesterday approved a budget restoration plan for community-based services and programs to serve children, from birth to age five, and their families. The money will restore funding for many programs and services including parent education, crisis intervention, home visitation, and school based programs ranging from preschool classrooms, structured play groups, and family literacy services. Additional funding was allocated to water fluoridation efforts and reducing the disproportionate number of deaths among African American infants.

African American children made up 30 percent of the homicide victims in 20 years covered by a recent county study, when they made up only 12 percent of the child population.
