Public invited to help improve safety and well-being of children

    • African American children in Sacramento County are dying at a disproportionate rate:
    • They are twice as likely as Caucasian children to die from a variety of causes before their 18th birthday.
    • They represent 12% of our population and 22% of all child deaths.
    • Deaths caused by third party homicide, infant sleep related deaths, child abuse and neglect homicides, perinatal conditions, and suicide contribute most to the wide disparity.

Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna established a Blue Ribbon Commission to address the issue of disproportionate African American child deaths. The Commission will review data, investigate model programs in other communities, hear from experts in child protection and well-being, and seek broad community input.

The public is invited to the first of three community meetings to review data, learn about model programs in other communities, hear from experts in child protection and well-being, and provide input.

    When:  Tuesday, May 15, 2012 –6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

    Where: Greater Sacramento Urban League

    3725 Marysville Blvd, Sacramento 95838

The Commission will report to the Board of Supervisors with recommendations and findings in early 2013.
